Food ordering marketplace Just Eat acquires Mexican rival Sindelantal

With this acquisition, food ordering platform Just Eat will add 2,500 restaurants in Mexico to its online marketplace, and generate over 60,000 orders per month

food.delivery lJustEat plc, an online food ordering marketplace with a considerable presence in India, has fully acquired Mexico-based competitor Sindelantal. This transaction marks Just Eat’s entry into the Mexican online market for takeaway delivery, as it continues to strengthen its presence in Latin America.

With this acquisition, Just Eat will add 2,500 restaurants in Mexico, including Papa Johns and Chilis to its online marketplace, and generate over 60,000 orders per month. After the deal goes through, Sindelantal’s Co-founders, Diego Ballestero and Evaristo Babe, will become country managers at Just Eat to oversee future business growth and development.

This is the second transaction between Just Eat and Sindelantal, after the former’s acquisition of Sindelantal’s spanish business in 2012. Spanish VC firm Seaya Ventures owns majority stake in Sindelantal.

Sindelantal is an online platform for food delivery that operates a network of over 3,000 restaurants in Mexico. With more than 60,000 orders every month, Sindelantal has presence in Mexico’s main cities.

Just Eat has also announced that it has increased its stake in IF-JE Participações Ltda, a joint venture between Just Eat and Brazilian online food delivery venture iFood, to 30 per cent from the current 25 per cent.

Started in 2001, Just Eat is a leading online marketplace for food ordering. Headquartered in London, the firm is active in 13 countries globally. There are currently over 40,800 takeaway restaurants within its network.

Last week, Rocket Internet-backed foodpanda.in acquired JustEat’s India business, which has over 2,000 restaurants listed on its platform.
