PopDigital, a creative content producer headquartered in Selangor in Malaysia, today announced the acquisition of two Malay-language lifestyle sites, Buzzkini.com and Salaam.tv.
Buzzkini is a social news channel with a Facebook following of close to one million, whereas Salaam is catered to the modest lifestyle consumer and has a following of over 900,000 on Facebook.
A new team is currently being put in place to develop these titles.
“We have been looking to grow our digital media offerings, and after taking a longer term view, we decided to venture into the Malay-language market. Less than 10 per cent of the Malaysian population consume content in English. Companies that continue to cater only to the urban, English-speaking market will likely stagnate in the near future as the economy and population shifts further,” said Hardesh Singh, Founder of PopDigital.
“In addition, statistics show that the T20 (top 20 per cent) and M40 (middle 40 per cent) income groups recorded the highest growth, with Malay households leading in both categories. Combined with an increase in the average household expenditure and the Malay segment’s huge appetite for content, this will allow us to develop e-services in the near future as we capture and grow our audience. Our next goal is to complement media with lifestyle options,” he added.
PopDigital conceptualises and produces original creative content in all forms. It provides a full media and marketing service from conceptualising creative ideas and campaigns to 360-degree execution.
PopDigital has a diverse portfolio of projects, including Popfolio Network, which consists of eight content platforms ranging from fashion and beauty to education; The Greatest Hits, a creative and media agency; #BetterCities, which focuses on community-based projects to improve urban living; PopLab, a unit focused on experimental ideas and content; PopStudio, a film and audio production studio; The Cooler Lumpur Festival, Southeast Asia’s first and annual festival of ideas.
